A fast bowler in the McGrath mould, Shane Bond is one of the leading fast bowlers in the game today. Hot pace, spot-on accuracy and deceptive deliveries make him one of the most difficult bowlers to encounter in international cricket. The amazing thing about Bond is that he does not cut down on his pace even in limited overs cricket where the chief requirement is to try and be accurate and restrict the batsman. His average and strike rate in both Tests and ODI’s are remarkable. On his day Bond can run through sides as he did while taking the New Zealand best figures of six for 23 against Australia in the 2003 World Cup which he himself improved to six for 19 against Zimbabwe a couple of years later. He is the quickest New Zealander to reach 50 one-day international wickets. In Tests his best has been ten for 99 against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2005 and in the two match series he took 13 wickets at 9.234 apiece. In the process he became the quickest among all New Zealand bowlers to get to 50 wickets, achieving the mark in only his 12th match. More such record breaking feats would surely have come Bond’s way had his career not been interrupted by various injuries. But when on song, his deadly bouncer and inswinging yorker are weapons that can defeat the best of batsmen and his bowling certainly increases the potency of the New Zealand attack.
