Improving by leaps and bounds Farveez Maharoof bids fair to become Sri Lanka’s next all rounder. Essentially a bowler who can bat Maharoof has come a long way in the last couple of years particularly in one-day cricket. He has come up through the ranks playing for Sri Lanka under-15, under-17 and under-19 and leading the under-19 team to the 2004 World Youth Cup in Bangladesh. The disparity in the bowling figures in his Test and ODI career are glaring clearly giving the impression that Maharoof is more at home in the shorter version of the game. And while not a regular in the Test team Maharoof is an integral part of the one-day squad where his lively seam bowling and skilful use of the long handle makes him a more than useful player. He is particularly effective in seamer friendly conditions and came of age during the ICC Champions Trophy in England in 2004. Two years later in the same competition in India he came up with his career best figures of six for 14 as the West Indies were shot out for 80. As a late order batsman Maharoof is capable of giving the scoring rate the necessary impetus in the slog overs. He does boast of a strike rate of over 82 in ODIs but only one half century means that he has not made full use of his batting talents.
