An aggressive young batsman from Uttar Pradesh, he has a penchant for hitting double hundreds. His talent has already seen him being labeled the next Yuvraj Singh, but he is still quite a bit distance away from fulfilling that tag. He has dismantled bowling attacks across the country and in a manner that reflects a bully, made his way to the Indian Under-19 squad. His 620 runs in six games, in the 2005-06 season, propelled Uttar Pradesh to Ranji Trophy glory and a couple of composed knocks, when given the opportunity in one-dayers, was maked out by the then India coach Greg Chappell as some one whose backfoot stance reminded him of Brian Lara. He is an equally gifted fielder and adds zing to the one-day squad, and it was indeed a surprise when, even before getting an ODI fifty, he was fast-tracked into the Test side against England in March 2006, and on the subsequent tour to the West Indies. However, he couldn’t bat consistently enough for the selectors to repose their faith in him and as a result was chucked out of the squad after the horrendous tour to South Africa in December 2006. He was recalled after a year, as part of the 16-man squad for the CB Series in Australia, which they won. He was bought by the Chennai Super Kings to play in the IPL and turned in quite a few stupendous performances, based on which he was selected for the Bangladesh tri-series and Asia cup in Pakistan.
