The most outstanding aspect of Dwayne Smith’s game is that he has been able to maintain a strike rate of 100 despite playing over fifty ODIs. The average as only to be expected is well below 20 but during the short time he spends at the crease Smith clouts the ball freely for fours and sixes and his knocks can be pretty explosive – enough to swing a match around. Astonishingly Smith displays the same aggressiveness in Tests and in fact his career got off to a dream start – a century on debut against South Africa at Cape Town in January 2004. His unbeaten 105 off as many balls with 15 fours and two sixes was hailed as a knock in true Calypso tradition. He needed only 93 balls to bring up his hundred, only the second in his first class career. Since then he has found runs hard to come by and has not even notched up a half-century. But because of his dangerous qualities with the bat he remains a much-feared opponent. In addition he is a brilliant versatile fielder and his medium pacers have recently acquired a match winning touch. He has a five wicket haul and two four wicket hauls and the manner in which he ripped through the Indian top order at Kuala Lumpur in 2006 during the DLF Cup match was a revelation.
