He has been in and out of the test team ever since he made his debut against the visiting South Africans in 2000, and is yet to play an innings in ODIs. A right hand batsman in the style of Azharuddin, Jaffer was seen as the big star coming next out of Mumbai after he hit a triple-century in only his second first-class game. But Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock proved too hot to handle in his first test series and he then had to suffer a short sabbatical from international cricket. Not to be dogged down, he continued to pile on the runs in domestic cricket and a string of big scores in 2001-02 won him a place on the tour of the West Indies. There he hit two elegant half-centuries but was not keeping a good enough price on his wicket and thus again lost out to other upcoming openers. He next came into the limelight with some superb performances for the India A team on the 2003 tour of England, but spent three years in the domestic wilderness before being recalled to the squad for the third Test against Sri Lanka in 2005-06. He made most of his first chance on return, against England in March 2006, notching up his maiden Test hundred and followed it up with a double ton against West Indies in June 2006. In 2007-08, he hit another elegant double century at Eden Gardens against the visiting Pakistanis. Inspite of being a test player primarily, he was bought by the Bangalore Royal Challengers franchise to play for them in IPL.
