School cricket championship
plan announced
As part of the grass-roots revival in
Pakistan cricket that the Chairman, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had
outlined earlier, PCB has announced a plan for a comprehensive school
cricket championship. The plan envisages the participation of 420
schools in 34 districts from all nine regions of the country. The
championship, to be held from March, 2005, would initially be played
at a district level and progress to an inter-district and inter-regional
level. The final is scheduled for either Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore or
National Stadium, Karachi and will be televised. It is expected that
the winner of this final will meet the winner of the final of the
Sri Lankan school championship and this particular match will alternate
annually in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The major features of the school championship
are as follows:
(i) Apart from the first round, the championship will be played according
to a traditional format and not on a limited-overs basis.
(ii) All districts will be invited to organise the tournament.
(iii) Both government and private schools would participate in the
school championships.
(iv) Cricket kits will be provided to each school. (v) A coach will
be appointed for each region. In addition, 9 sub-committees will be
formed to monitor the event.
